Locally known as kauso, the caterpillars have been infesting the vegetation, including crops in the areas. The locals are equally concerned over the possibility of developing eye irritation and infection from the hair of the insects that might be floating in the air invisible.

According to Janak Jung Basnet of Chaulakharka-3, over a dozen goats and six buffaloes have died due to the caterpillars. “You don’t see its fine hair but if it somehow gets into your eyes or stuck on your body, the itching is unbearable,” Basnet shared.

Sajan BK, also from Chaulakharka, said even a slight infection of the eye leads to eye irritation, conjunctivitis and the skin develops rashes with swelling.

The caterpillar menace is also seen in Gumdel and Bamti Bhandar areas of the neighbouring district Ramechhap.
